About SaveJeffcoLibraries

Save Jeffco Libraries is a grass-roots group of Jeffco Library patrons, including many former Trustees of the Jefferson County Public Library, who are concerned about the future funding and independence of the Library.  We are alarmed by the actions of Jefferson County Commissioners in diverting to other departments tax revenues that were clearly approved in an election in 1986 exclusively for Library purposes and further we are alarmed at attempts to impose changes in Library policy on the Library Board of Trustees.

Save Jeffco Libraries was formed after the Jefferson County Commissioners passed a resolution in January 2010 “opting out” the county from the formation of a library district as requested in a lawful petition submitted to the Commissioners signed by over 1,300 Jeffco voters.  The Colorado Library Law (C.R.S. 24-90-107) specifically directs the County Commissioners to create a library district either by resolution/ordinance or election upon receipt of a petition from at least 100 voters requesting that they do so.

By opting the County out of the formation of a library district, we believe that the Commissioners are thwarting the will of the people and denying citizens the right to petition their government.
